The 1U Compact PCI system was produced using standard CPCI backplanes and power backplanes but with all of its internal PCB’s being conformal coated.

The system provided 2 slots for 6U Compact PCI CPU boards and one standard P47 Power Supply.  Power entry was via a filtered IEC inlet connector and a high performance surge protector manufactured by Bus Solutions Ltd.  The enclosure was designed to be configured at manufacture to provide the 6U Compact PCI cards to be either front or rear mounted.

The system is cooled by 8 high performance 40mm Fans, manufactured by Sofasco Inc, on each side providing a uniform airflow through the system.  The systems have been designed and manufactured to meet all CE standards and EMC & Safety.

The extensive range of subrack components such as extrusions, side plates, backplanes and EMC gasketing together with the comprehensive system level components  provides Bus Solutions with the platform to compete with other enclosure suppliers such as Rittal and ELMA.  Part number cross references to supply equivalent subracks; cases and Systems can be done quickly to maintain on time delivery and at competitive prices.

Sofasco visits the UK

On his recent visit to Bus Solutions new warehouse facilities in Littleborough, Rochdale UK, Mike Frazier President of Sofasco ™ gave the go ahead to distribute the complete range of axial, blowers and cross-flow fans.

Sofasco™ offers an extensive range of AC and DC fans coupled with their increasing range of equivalent Comair -Rotron parts to fill the void left by the demise the company last year.

The agreement is to service the European market place with online sales, stock and engineering support. The franchise fits in with BSL’s strategy of marketing SYSTEM components commonly used within VME, Compact PCI and bespoke Systems produced by Bus Solutions Manufacturing side of the business. Bus Solutions has been using Sofasco fans for many years, their knowledge of the product quality, reliability and SOFASCO has given confidence to proceed with this agreement.

Sofasco Fan Range

The range sizes of DC axial fans are extensive from 25mm to 200mm with 35 different size options and supports voltage variants from 5V to 48V. The AC range is just as impressive with 32 different size and mounting options from 80mm to 250mm with 115V and 230V parts for each size. Sofasco also produces a comprehensive range of AC and DC Blowers. Also Cross-flow fans with both AC options and several standard DC voltage variants.

Sofasco prides itself with its ability to support fast samples and development stock and options of fast tracking of new designs and special options such as IP54/P55 protection, bearing and termination variations. The core of the system was a bespoke multi layer high voltage high current PCB backplane which could be inserted with 9 high current relay multiplexing cards. Each card comprised of 61 relay and a control interface to an National Instruments PXI system. The outputs from the backplane were connected to a personality module tray on ultimately to the product under test. Extra interface such as digital, rs232, rs485, CAN and Profibus were also connected to the personality tray. This tray was also removable for ease of wiring and the insertion of a new part for testing.

Internal trays were fitted with power supplies for control and supplying the unit under test. The system was built in a 40 U Schroff cabinet and all internal wiring and PCB’s were protected with monitored Breakers

Our solution was to build a system with extended side panels multiple depth side extrusion for extended depth cPCI and normal depth areas for PSU with p47 power backplanes. The system had an hinged front panel to access the fan tray and removable hard drive. The forced cooling draws in from the bottom front and exhausts at the top rear.

All this type of work adds to the knowledge base when Bus Solutions designs systems and increases our qualified components list which speeds our designs through the testing cycle.

Our solution was to design a low power cmos gated PCB with relay output and opto isolated control inputs.

Three settable timers with sequence control. This could be powered by a wide DC input voltage with power and output indication. The whole unit was fitted in an eleven pin relay type box for ease on connection.

We were commissions to design a custom enclosure for the military market Using Commercial Of The Shelf, COTS, products. The enclosure is designed to meet the rigorous NAVAL EMC and environmental standards. This system had to meet both physical and electrical criteria for operation and fixing.
